Katha Pollitt on women in higher education
I alluded to this phenomenon in an earlier post, and now Katha Pollitt has a nice piece in The Nation on the "feminization" of post-secondary schooling in the U.S. In a nutshell, women now outnumber men by a significant margin in colleges and universities, and the gap is expected to increase, with women projected to make up 60 percent of undergraduate admissions in the next few years.
Of course, that doesn't mean women have achieved parity in the workplace. In fact, according to the U.S. General Accounting Office (GAO) Report GAO-04-35 (pdf file), women still make just 80 cents for every dollar earned by their male counterparts doing the same job.
So there's still a hell of a long way to go...
